Mutton Kurma

Wondering why I'm cooking only non-veg for the past two days?
Actually, I was expecting a guest for the weekend. But I had to cancel the program as my son was sick. I do not like to freeze and use meat , that's why I had to do one after the other.

Ingredients:
Chopped mutton- 1 1/2 lbs
Potatoes- 4 (cut into quarters)
Large onions- 2 (finely chopped)
Tomato- 3 (finely chopped)
Grated ginger- 1 inch piece
Crushed garlic- 5 cloves
Cinnamon- 1 stick
Bay leaves- 2
Grated coconut- 1 cup
poppy seeds- 1tsp
cashews- 3 to 4
fennel- 1 tsp
Red chili powder- 1 1/2 tsp
Dhania powder- 1/2 tsp
Turmeric powder- 1/2 tsp
Salt to taste
Oil- 2 tablespoons
A bunch of chopped cilantro (coriander) leaves

Procedure:
Mix 1 tsp of salt & turmeric to the mutton pieces. Add 2 cups of water and pressure-cook until the mutton is tender. Grind the grated coconut with poppy seeds, cashews and fennel seeds. Set aside.
Heat the oil in a pan and fry the cinnamon and bay leaves for a minute. Then add onions and ginger garlic . Fry until golden brown. Then add the potatoes and fry for few minutes. Next add tomatoes and all the masala powders. Cook till tomatoes are completely mashed. Now add the pressure-cooked meat broth and boil for few more minutes. Then add the coconut paste and bring it to a boil. Now add mutton ,Cover the pan and let it cook over medium heat for 15-20 minutes or until the raw smell of coconut is gone. Add some salt if needed. Sprinkle with chopped coriander leaves. Serve hot with plain rice or parotta.

For vegetarians, you can follow the same procedure to make a veg kurma.

Mutton and Lamb are different...
Mutton is goats meat
and Lamb is sheeps meat.
Both are very different in flavour taste etc.
Since you said mutton kurma and wrote about lamb, I was just wondering?

Dear Aruna,
You are most welcome. Glad you liked it. This kurma tastes great with idlli too. Please come back for more.

Dear Rajani,
Warm welcome to you. Yes ,ghee rice is a perfect combination for this. Actually, I don't eat mutton or lamb. It's my hubby who likes it very much. Usually I make the curry first, test for taste and then put meat in it. When I make chicken kurma I always prefer ghee rice better than plain rice.

Dear Asha,
I disagree with you on this. Desserts come first. Especially with your presentations you are not helping me at all.
You know what... I tried to take the kellogg's challenge from this monday. After seeing your post of desserts I ended up eating 1 pint of ice cream. I know, I'm too bad at this.

Hi Sukanya,
I'm glad to hear that your mom cooks the same way too. I do not know specifically what poppy seeds tastes like. I think it gives thickness and aroma to the kurma. will try to find more about it from someone else.

Dear Inji,
Thanks for bringing it to my notice. I did use only mutton. Actually, I have saved some recipes in notepad long time back. When I copied it I forgot to change the word 'lamb'.
Hey, did you notice that I have changed the links in bisebelabath? Another thanks for that also.

You visited my site a while ago and asked about Beerakaya in Tamil: Peerkangai. Found it on the net. Your non-veg curries look great.

Thanks lata for clarifying it. I have used peerkangai in sambar and kootu only. Will try your recipe soon.

Hi Magnolia,
You are such a Sweet-heart for trying it again and giving me your comments. Actually, this is my friend's recipe. I don't eat mutton but my hubby does. I do it only for him. So, after getting your comment I was thinking what could have gone wrong and how I could rectify it so that others don't feel disappointed too.
ThankGod you tried it without potatoes and it came out ok. I'll do the same next time for my hubby. Also, I'll write it in the main post too. Thanks again for visiting and please do come back for more.
