Kothavarangai parrupu usili

This is my fav side dish. I usually like to take a cup of this curry , add 2 tbsp of yogurt. Mix well and eat it just like that. Try it , you might like it too. My hubby dosen't like to eat this combination. He likes to eat with plain rice, mor kuzhambu or puli kuzhambu. I have already blogged about green beans usili here. Gawar beans has a mild bitter taste, so adding a few pinches of sugar will mask that taste. You can skip adding sugar. I don't do it all the time. So, here is the recipe.

Ingredients:
Gawar beans- 2 cups
onion- 1/2 (finely chopped)
channa dal -3/4 th cup
green chillies- 8
red chillies- 2 (broken)
ginger- 1 " piece
turmeric- 1/2 tsp
curry leaves- few
salt- as reqd
sugar- 2 pinches

Procedure:
Trim the ends of gawar beans and cut it into little pieces. Usually, I cut mine 1/2 " pieces. But this time (as seen in pic) I cut it a little big. But I felt it small cut ones are much better. Steam cook this in rice cooker with some salt and sugar.
Soak channa dal in 2 cups water for one or two hours. Drain and grind into coarse paste with salt, green chillies and ginger.
Heat oil in pan. Fry mustard seeds, urad dal and jeera seeds. Then add onions, red chillies, turmeric and curry leaves. After a few mins add the ground channa dal mixture and saute for 15 mins. Now add the steamed vegetable and mix well. check for salt. Serve with plain rice and puli kuzhambu. It tastes great with rasam saadham or curd rice too.Enjoy!!!

I too love this dish, but it has been a long time since I cooked it.

I had posted my version of this some time back but yours is more healthier with dal.
It is slightly bitter and I normally add some jaggery to offset the bitterness.

Kribha, the usili with gawar beans looks really inviting, like usili a lot but don't cook it that often and for some reason I don't see gawar beans in the Indian grocery store anymore.

Hi Asha,
My hubby is a big fan of gawar beans too. Happy that u liked it. Will gladly send over the plate to you. Take care. Hugs.:))

Hi Sirisha,
I love this curry too. I eat this vegetable only if it is done as a usili. When I was little, my mom would mix it with plain rice and lots of ghee. Then she would make small small balls and feed my sister and me. Tasted heavenly.
Miss that so much.

Hi Rohini,
same pinch. I love any kind of usilis.

Hi Kumudha,
Thanks dear. Glad that u liked it. This is my fav too.

Hi Rajitha,
You sure are like me. I also like to eat usili mixed with a bowl of yogurt. When I wrote the post I was not sure how much quantity to write. But I do eat lots of curd with it.

Hi TBC,
I have seen your version earlier. I liked that too. But I wanted to post what I've been eating from childhood. I'm glad that you liked it.Thanks for the nice comment.

Hi ISG,
Too bad that you don't get gawar beans anymore. Still you can try it with okra or beans. Have a nice day.:))

Hi Kribha
I've put up the picture for Ricotta stuffed shells now, hope you like it, I also made something with green beans last night, I boiled them for 5-6 minutes then fry them with some flour and garam masala powder, it was spicy and crunchy but it didnt look as good as yours:-)I am looking forward to try this one.

My mom used to always make paruppu usli with kothavarangai... i use beans instead. This looks too good and I like both combinations with yogurt and with vathal kuzhambu/mor kuzhambu. The last shot is too tempting. :)

Ain't this a classic. I love kothavarangai. The paruppu offsets the bitterness from kothavarangai.

Hi Lissie,
Glad you liked it. Do give it a try sometime. You won't be disappointed.

Hi Priar,
I was so happy to read your comment that too in tamil font. I'm so glad that you liked it.

Hi toothfairy,
Thanks for updating that post with a pic. I did see it and it was great. Your recipe sounds simple and intresting. Got to try that too. Happy that you liked mine. Do give it a try sometime. You might like it.

Hi Lavanya,
I also prefer usilis with okra or beans. But my hubby loves this veggie, so I do it for him once in awhile. The combination with mor kozhambu is great too. I forgot to mention it in my post. Glad that you liked the pictures.

Hi Suganya,
It's true. This is a classic dish. My fav too.

Hi Bharathy,
I know some people do not like it. I was not a big fan of this veggie either. Recently, I started loving it. And yes, we do get good gawar beans in US. Sometimes, even better than the ones in India.

Hi Remya,
That's ok. Some people don't like it. But you can try it with okra or green beans.
